Amanda England Wins Teaching Award

Amanda England

MAIS student Amanda England was recently chosen as the John W. Teets Outstanding Teaching Award recipient. Winners of the award are nominated by W. P. Carey students and can be undergraduate professors, graduate professors, and graduate assistants. As a teaching assistant for Accounting 230, Financial Accounting, Amanda exhibited "enthusiasm for student success and for the subject matter," and went "above and beyond requirements to provide students with meaningful understanding of the subject matter."

Amanda began her academic career at Arizona State University. She earned Accounting and Computer Information Systems bachelors degrees before beginning the MAIS program this Fall.

Amanda says the best part of being a T.A. was getting to know her students, and having the opportunity to practice her presentation skills through teaching. Winning the award "is an honor," she says.

One of Amanda's nominators said, "She can simplify a question into terms that are easier to understand," and that "she will find a way to make sure you understand and do well." This kind of dedication is what led to Amanda being chosen as the award recipient.

Please join us in congratulating Amanda on winning this outstanding award.

Chronicle of Higher Education Ranks Accountancy in Top 10

The W. P. Carey Department of Marketing has been ranked fourth and the School of Accountancy eighth by the Chronicle of Higher Education in its 2007 Top Research Universities Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index.

Only Penn State’s Smeal College of Business, University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management ranked higher in marketing.

“Our teaching quality is exceptional and our research has impact on practice and drives thought leadership,” said Marketing Department Chair Michael Mokwa. “Our initiatives, like the AMA Consortium, a new area of emphasis for our MBA working professionals, the professional sales program and sports business will help both our students and business partners, and will gain recognition for all of us.”

In eighth place, the School of Accountancy ranked among the best schools in the nation, including the University of Wisconsin at Madison and New York University

"The Chronicle's recognition of our research productivity reflects the top caliber of our faculty,” said Charles Christian, director of the School of Accountancy. “Faculty research advances the accounting profession and business management practices and enriches our instructional programs. As a result, our undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. programs are all ranked among the very top in the nation.”

The 2007 index compiles overall institutional rankings on 375 universities that offer a Ph.D. degree. Universities compete in seven disciplines: biological and biomedical sciences, business, education, engineering, health sciences professions, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences. The index examines faculty members who are listed on a Ph.D. program's Web sites, and includes a total of 217,254 names. Faculty members can be judged on as many as five factors, depending on the most important variables in the given discipline: books published, journal publications, citations of journal articles, federal-grant dollars awarded, and honors and awards.

School of Accountancy Ph.D. student Zhan Gao awarded the J. Hal Reneau Memorial Fellowship

I am very pleased to announce that the Ph. D students have selected Zhan Gao as the J. Hal Reneau Memorial Fellow for 2007-08.  For those who are not familiar with the Fellowship, I have included Prof. Jim Boatsman's comments:  "Professor Hal Reneau passed away in 2001.  He was a valued mentor, colleague, and friend to doctoral students and his faculty peers.  Although his outstanding contributions to the W.P. Carey School took many forms, he was particularly devoted to doctoral students.  There is no finer example of selfless motivation to help others."

The Hal Reneau Memorial Fellowship was created through the generosity of Hal's widow, Sue Reneau, his mother Tommye Reneau, and over 100 formal doctoral students and faculty colleagues.  It is awarded by vote of doctoral students to recognize that student most exemplary  of Hal's Values: Commitment to serious scholarship, Devotion to helping others and Humility.

School of Accountancy wins KPMG/ALPHA competition

The School of Accountancy team won first place in the National KPMG/ALPFA case competition held in Orlando, Florida on August 5th and 6th.  Team members included Nicholas Arambula, James Choca, Mariabelen Diaz, Carlos Solorio, Jurgen Weber and Lisa Wiley, undergraduates in the School of Accountancy.  The team prevailed over 27 other notable competitive institutions from across the US territory.

The case involved deciding on appropriate accounting methods for sabbatical leave, which has recently required companies such as Intel, PDF Solutions, Time Warner and McDonalds to either restate or have a cumulative effect adjustment to retained earnings.  The team's solution required identifying and integrating authority from a FASB Statement, GASB and Emerging Issues Task Force Issues Summary.

Special thanks are due to Karen Geiger from the School of Accountancy, who accompanied the team to Orlando; Scott Cripps of KPMG: Tempe, Arizona office who volunteered his time as a professional advisor to the team; and to Doctoral Students Xiaobo Dong, David Erkens, Susan Gyeszly and Vanessa Makridis who volunteered to coach the team on presentation skills.

Congratulations to all!

Charles Christian Travels to Kosovo to Recruit MAIS Students

Charles Christian, director of the School of Accountancy, recently returned from a trip to Kosovo, a province of the former Yugoslavia under a United Nations protectorate, where he interviewed applicants for a federally funded program to train future University of Pristina (UP) accounting educators.  As part of the program, those selected will spend a year at ASU in the Master of Accountancy and Information Systems program at the W. P. Carey School of Business.

The program, "Transforming Accountancy Education at the University of Pristina," is funded by a $350,000 grant from Higher Education Development (HED) and is being led by Steven Batalden, director of the ASU Melikian Center: Russian, Eurasian, & East European Studies.  In addition to bringing Kosovar students  to ASU, the project team will survey businesses in Kosovo to determine which skills are most desired by potential employers of UP accounting graduates.

Kurt Pany Receives Excellence in Teaching Award

The School of Accountancy is pleased to announce that Kurt Pany is the recipient of the “2006 Excellence in Teaching Award” sponsored by the Arizona Society of CPAs Foundation. The competition for this award is very keen. Each post-secondary institution in Arizona is permitted to nominate one faculty member. Only one award is granted each year.

Kurt joined the ASU faculty in 1977, and will celebrate his 30 years of service this spring. During this period, Kurt has consistently achieved outstanding teaching evaluations from his students and his peers. At the same time, Kurt has been a faculty champion for academic rigor and the integration of ethics in the curriculum. He has been the lead faculty in our capstone course, "Principles of Auditing." He also recently developed a state-of-the-art graduate "Advanced Auditing" class for our Master of Accountancy & Information Systems program.

Kurt's contributions as an educator have not gone unnoticed. He won the 2002 Arizona CPA Foundation Award for Innovation in the Classroom for integrating professional ethics throughout the undergraduate auditing course.

Kurt is a prolific scholar with over 60 publications, including publications in the premier journals in the field of auditing. His research continues to address issues of immediate importance to our profession. His most recent work, forthcoming in Accounting Horizons, examines audit firm rotation and corporate governance. Kurt is widely considered to be one of the leading auditing scholars in the nation, and his scholarship extends to current college texts for both undergraduate and graduate classes in auditing.

Kurt will be honored by the ASCPA at their annual meeting on May 15, 2007 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix.
